bean harvest

We harvested our beans the other day, before they got too old and affected by the heat, we actually should have harvested them the week before but we were too busy, so a few had gone yellow and had to be discarded.

 This is just a small portion of our bounty.

 I started by washing them all in the sink.

 Then I cut the ends off them and blanched them in boiling water for a couple of minutes.

 Then I stuck them in a bucket of cold water.

Drain them and bag them up ready for the freezer.
I ended up with 4 bags weighing 500g each plus another smaller bag that we used in salads that day.

My next task is to make something with the bounty of cucumbers we have.

  1. Well done Deanne. If those veges had been at our place they likely would have been eaten each day in the garden before any reached the kitchen. Some of our children eat cucumbers whole, one at a time as if they were a fruit. Never managed to grow enough to have excess.

  2. Nice looking beans and a good job you've done freezing them. Whenever I've grown beans the kids have 'grazed' on them and there's not usually enough to have with meals but at least the kids are healthy and not hungry!
    I have a great Bread and Butter Pickle recipe that makes 10 cups. Wonderful on cold meat or cheese sandwiches or even just a pickle sandwich. Email me if you want to try it and I'll email it back :).
    Hmm, I think I need to grow some more cucumbers as I haven't made this for a while!

  3. mmm fresh beans. We may have to try growing some ourselves. We have had lots of peas in the past but never grown beans.
