putty spot

After my question a few people weighed in with their favourite and the overall winner was the putty spot.
This was one of my favourites too, along with the pink paisley but in a house full of males I decided against it.
But there was a little problem.
The putty spot I showed you was from a pair of pillowcases that I picked up op shopping and I really didn't want to cut into it.
Now my big sister celebrated a major birthday the other day and so I went to pay her a visit on Sunday, so this meant I could take a little detour to Spotlight at Coffs Harbour and have a look around.
I looked around all the fabric departments and saw lots of nice fabrics that were possibilities, but way too many to pin down and obviously not "the" right one to steal my heart.
Then in the dressmaking section I found a putty spot, so I bought a couple of metres and headed off to see my sister.

Now of course a poplin fabric is not going to be that hard wearing in a large household and while I know I could get a putty spot in Mexican oil cloth I would have to order it and pay for postage and wait for it to arrive and I am a bit impatient, so I decided to put it on the chairs and then top it with some of my book covering plastic.

Now while doing this of course I kept thinking of the TV show The Nanny and how her mum always had the lounge suite covered in plastic, but with small children who are still likely to put their dirty feet on a chair to reach something I am not going to worry and it will save me pulling out the staples to wash the seats too often.

Comparing the two, plastic and non plastic, as I have enough fabric to cover more chairs I thought I would leave VCH's without plastic to test durability.

Here are all 4 chairs covered.

While I was there I saw the gorgeous aqua spot which I think I will use in my laundry room that is about to be transformed.

  4. I agree, with kids you have to think of functionality first. Or just plan to recover them every year.

  7. They look great. Tempting to wrap the kids in contact, but no, much safer idea to cover the chairs.

  10. I love the finished product. I just refinished my kitchen chairs and went for the pretty with a little bit of practical and used the vinyl cover too. With kids sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
