the party.... the cake

 This is the cake.
It turned out well.
Even though it was meant to have roses all over it.
I ran out of icing sugar to make more icing.
It takes a lot more icing than you think.
That's a double batch of icing.
500g of butter 4 cups of icing sugar.
The exposed sides that you can see is covered in white chocolate ganache tinted pink.
I ended up just putting the roses on the top and bottom of the cake.
My kids said after that they were glad that I didn't put icing all over as it was too sweet.

The recipe came from the latest Donna Hay kids annual.
I used cochineal to colour the icing because it is natural.

I love how the layers turned out.
Next time I will trim the cakes flat.
I thought they looked fairly flat until I went to ice it.

Tomorrow the actual party will be featured.

  2. Wow, that's a massive cake! Pleased it worked out well. Yes it would have been super sweet if iced thickly all over.

    1. We only gave each child 2 layers, but we probably could have even given them 1 each.

  3. Looks like a beautiful cake!! I feel bad, I am wimping out on my daughter's birthday this year. I have been sick with various respiratory and colds for the last month, and I am just not in party mode. My sister in law offered to plan it all for me instead, I told her to have fun. Maybe next year! You did a great job!! I bet she enjoyed that party!!

    1. I saw a show featuring Planet Cake and they said they put ganache on all their cakes before icing and I thought it sounded like a good idea!

  6. Your VCH was correct the icing was rather sweet, still very delicious, you just wanted to keep eating.

  8. I'm going through your last 10 or so blog posts and following the party preparations. That cake is beautiful and I think it's perfection without roses all over it. I think it's interesting that you put the cakes upside down. Is that the way everyone does it there or just one of your fascinating quirks? :) Lisa~

    1. I thought putting them upside down would give me a flatter top, but I really should have levelled them with a knife, so I didn't end up with gaps at the side that had to be filled with icing.
