hello, i'm back with some great finds

I have been off the air for a couple of weeks, just feeling like I didn't have anything to say, or just couldn't be bothered to say the little that I felt like saying if that makes sense!
Anyhow today was a special day, it was Second Hand Saturday and there were tonnes of garage sales across our whole region.
I had been planning on some garage sale action today not realising it was a big day, but my friend Erin rang me to let me know yesterday, which was just as well because it was bucketing down rain this morning and I probably wouldn't have gone if I hadn't known it was going to be big.

This is some of my haul.
Some chairs for my new sewing room ($2.50 each), I have some plans to paint them up that involve polka dots!
Some lanterns, old tennis rackets and squash racquet, a crate, the oars were $5 and are made of Oregon, they are unfinished but I am sure I can do something about that ;) - they are very heavy!
I love the little tray, it was one of my favourite finds.

Of course every home needs a disco ball!
I got this along with the racquets, a pile of CDs DVDs, rubber stamps and ink for $10 the lot at another sale.

A cute little outdoor table.
I am not sure what the other thing is maybe part of a playpen, but I have plans to use it in my laundry like this.

The suitcases are for my sewing room and the dress up pith helmet free.

This of course is my absolute favourite thing.
A Singer treadle sewing machine table,

 Complete with the sewing machine.
I paid $40 for this, what a bargain!
I remember looking for these back when we were first married and living in Brisbane and I would come across them in this condition for $250 plus.
Of course I couldn't fit this in the car but VCH kindly went and fetched it for me in his ute (pick-up).

I didn't actually snag this today but thought I would share it anyway, this little basket was an op shop bargain during the School Holidays for $2 and the table legs were a little project also from the holidays, I have some ideas for the table top but I haven't got there yet.

I got a few other things like some dress ups, Duplo, Tupperware and books etc and a $2 mirror for the boys bathroom.
I only went to about half the sales in our area because I simply ran out of room in the Tarago, puff and time.

  1. We ran out of puff too, the children all came and were hungry. I think the pith helmet is my fav of your finds. We also found a few hats for the small boys for dress ups, and a very big funky blue hat that reminds me of the Cat in the Hat. We didn't find anything too exciting though.

  2. Wow - what great finds. You wouldn't find all those treasures in Brisbane for the price you paid. Can't wait to see w hat you do with them all.

  5. What a haul! You did great! Its funny, I thought yard sales were something that happened in every country, then I talked with someone from England who said they had never seen such a thing! Glad to know "we" aren't the only ones who love yard sales! Do you all have them every Saturday when weather is good? Or is it just certain days of the year. Here in the US there are always tons of yard sales on Saturdays' when the weather is good. People advertize them in the news paper and on Craigslist. Can't wait to see what you do with all that stuff! I am a bit jealous of the oars, though I have to admit I'm not sure where I would put them if I had them!

  6. Hi Melissa,
Garage sales as we call them are year round in Australia, because we have good weather year round. The best time is probably just before Christmas and the worst time is January when everyone is away on summer holidays so not many bother to do them then. I miss going to them in soccer season (autumn, winter) because I am busy running around with kids, but now that we don't have Saturday morning sport I can enjoy the chase again.

  7. Oh wow what a haul! I love the suitcases. Those chairs for your sewing room will look great! You probably know how, but I found the easiest way to make polka dots and showed it in this post. http://thepolkadotcloset.blogspot.com/2011/04/making-polka-dot-suitcase.html
