dilemma

Today I am after a little bit of advice.

I picked up this little woven stool at my favourite 2nd hand boutique "THE DUMP" the other day for $3.
I am unsure what to do with it.
My first idea was to paint it all black.
However a friend said she loved it as it is,
so then I thought I would just fix the scratches on the legs.
However when I looked at it more closely I discovered that the tan woven bit was originally red.

If I paint it, it will have to be all the one colour because of the tight weave on the seat.

So what are your ideas - suggestions?
all black
fix the legs
or something else?

redeemed's first outing

Here are some photos of my first stall.
I didn't get to take them until after I had sold some of my things.
A couple of things sold while I was still setting up,
so I was getting excited,
but then it slowed down somewhat.

My sign that I got free from Vistaprint with my business cards etc.
They had a special on and I managed to get a few things free.

This table and the chairs that were with it sold before I had even finished setting up.
The lady took the chairs and left me the table and came back and collected the table at the end of the day.
I sold both of the spoon hooks.
VCH was surprised, as he thought no one would buy them!

I picked up the shutters at the dump for $5 each and VCH hinged them together so I could hang things on them.
I didn't have a chance to paint them before,
but I will paint them this week ready for Saturday's market.

These stools got lots of comments but no-one bought them.
One lady said that the numbers were down this year and not many people were buying.
I am hoping that will be different on the weekend because people go to that particular market to buy and you often see stalls there that you never see any other time.

This is my main table you can't see it in the photo,
but it is an old door with some old wooden trestles,
that we rescued before they were sent to the dump!

At the end of the markets, after I took my expenses out,
I made just over $100.
I was pleased with this for my first outing and a depressed market!
I actually made some more money yesterday as I sold some extra trestles I had.
So I am now $210 in profit with more to come as the lady wants the boards that went with the trestles,
VCH has to sort them out and take them to her in his ute this week.

I will be back later in the week to show you some more of the befores and afters.

introducing redeemed

You know the exciting news I have been hinting at for a couple of weeks well......

I am branching out and taking a big step (for me anyway) and embarking on a little venture.
I have been, for months, hoarding things I have found at op shops and garage sales,
with ideas to do them up and resell them.

During the last school holidays,
I had a friend over and when she saw all the projects I was working on
she offered me a part of her stall, at the best markets our town has all year!
It can be a several year waiting list to get a stall at these markets and they only happen once a year.
Naturally, I jumped at the chance!
This was just the kick start I needed!
As a trial run I am going to attend a car boot market at another once a year event the Antique and Collectables Fair.
The fair itself is held in a big pavillion at our local showground,
I saw an ad in the paper for stall holders for the car boot sale around the outside of the pavillion.

I thought this would be an ideal testing ground for my wares and I hope to be able to sell the sewing machine I bought for $30 a couple of weeks ago and make a nice profit!
If not I would happily keep it, I know the perfect spot for it!
(I will be back with the after photo soon, just waiting on a new knob)

I have also booked into a market evening at the end of November that is a fundraiser for her children's pre-school.
I am hoping that I will be able to sell a few Christmas orientated things,
and I am hoping to also do a stall at the local Carols by Candlelight.
So four stalls over a 6 week period, just as a little jumping off point,
to see how I go and whether this is a worthwhile venture.
At this stage I can't see myself doing a monthly market,
but popping up as I have enough items to sell and also maybe doing some commissioned work.
I have called my little business
 "redeemed"

My business card reads
(I got these from vistaprint)

redeemed
{unique gifts and homewares}
where old is made new
 *custom inquiries welcome*
Deanne 66.......
redeemed@skymesh.com.au

and on the back I have the verse:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation,
the old has gone,
the new has come!
2 CORINTHIANS 5:17

I had been thinking for many months about starting this up and wanting to come up with a name that both reflected what I was doing as well as who I am,
redeemed came to me as the perfect name.
I am redeeming old items and giving them a new life, just as I have been given new life!
I have finished lots of the smaller things but need to get stuck in and get the larger items finished for Saturday's car boot sale.
Some of the things I am selling include the items I showed you on Monday as well as

  cutlery herb markers,

  fork miniature picture holders,
I have also made some hooks using teaspoons and old fence palings.

pinwheels for the kids or young at heart, made with old music sheets, maps or children's books.

These are larger versions of the zeppelin, using up heaps of old frames I had laying around!

These smaller ones will be sold as a set.

Coasters made from worn books, music sheets, maps, and old ads in the local paper from 1954

I got this block of wood at the op shop for $2 and have painted it with chalkboard paint to create a message block.

Chalkboard placemats and coasters sold with a stick of chalk.

I have also has some of my tin roof .... rusted photos printed onto cards by redbubble
and if you would like to go over and have a look and buy any of my photos you can do so by clicking
I also had a black and white set done.
I am not happy with one of the photos as it doesn't match the rest of the set.
I will have to talk to redbubble when I get some more done.
I am undecided on whether or not to leave it in the set or pull it out and sell it separately.
What do you think?

I have quite a few other things yet to show you, but as this is way over the 5 photo limit
(who came up with that number anyway?) I won't go there today!
Plus some items are yet to be100%  finished.

My biggest problem is working out pricing.
Some of these things have cost me next to nothing,
but some things have taken quite a bit of time and energy to redeem.
The other thing is people are not buying like they used to and this is a struggling country town.
I want to be able to move my things and not be stuck with stock but also still make a decent profit!
Decisions, decisions!!
Still I am really excited,
so long as I get it all organised in time!

I doubt I will be back here before next week, but you can look forward to hearing about redeemed's first outing!

befores and afters

Just thought I would pop in and show you some befores and afters that I have been working on.

Here is the little egg thing that so many of you liked.

Here are the two frames I got for 20 cents each, look at them now!
I picked the souvenir cutlery  up from two different op shops months ago,
they were looking rather sad, amazing what a bit of hot water and bi-carb can do!
The background is cut from the other frame I found last weekend.
The second frame I painted black and have printed a zeppelin onto a page from an old encyclopedia.

This is the little nesting box, I want to add a little bird to the landing place.

Remember this from a while back, lots of people commented on liking this little step ladder.
What do you think now?
I am undecided on whether or not to distress it.
What do you think?

I will be back later in the week with my exciting news that I keep hinting at!

fab finds

It is so good not to have sport on a Saturday morning over summer!
Soccer season just about does us in- trying to co-ordinate 6 kids with games and refereeing responsibilities, so much so that in recent years we have banned the children from signing up for summer sport that involves Saturday morning games- we are so mean!!!

So anyway with our Saturday morning  free and VCH not playing golf,
the two of us went garage saling,
the kids were mostly still in bed,
so after telling B1 and B2 what we were doing we snuck headed off!
Having his work ute is such a bonus in getting stuff,
much easier than trying to fit stuff into the tarago!
We got some great buys- so nice that people were selling at garage sale prices and not thinking they were antique stores- my pet peeve!

Moving sales where people are getting rid of lots of stuff are the best!
This table and chairs $20.

This little egg cupboard $2

Nesting box $2- you should see it now!

Doll's house and furniture $5
and those are just some of the things from the first garage sale we hit!

These frames were 20c each- you should see them now!

$1

Side of the road find while out garage saling- looked like it fell off the back of a truck, absolutely filthy but FREE!!

 $10 for this outdoor setting

$2 for this little industrial stool!

Three rusty birdcages @ $2 each.

This is only a fraction of what we found.
We really hit the jackpot!
I will be back next week with some afters and some exciting news.

Have a fabulous weekend!
No garage saling this weekend,
town dress up party for the kids is on
and VCH is helping at the church working bee.
