I have been looking for one of these for over 20 years and quite frankly had given up hope of ever finding one, but when I least expected it I stumbled across one on Saturday.
I had taken B3 to a neighbouring town for soccer and on my way to the soccer field I passed a second hand shop with the name Steptoe and Sons- I have vague memories of that TV show as a kid.
I dropped B3 off and headed back, I wandered around seeing many great things- all out of my price range
(I am too much of a garage saler/op shopper to pay second hand prices)

Then I saw it and I had a look at the price ticket, it was only $20!
I have seen them go for hundreds of dollars,
but the fact that the bottom is rusted out might have something to do with it's cheap price,
but I don't care, no one would know.

I have several ideas for it, I am not totally sure which way to go, but in the meantime
I can experiment!
oh don't you love it when you stumble across something you have searched for, for years! well done to you! it's lovely- even with the rusted out bottom. Kate x
ReplyDeleteGreat find Deanne. I'm sure you will find just the right spot for it.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great find! However, what exactly is it? Hehe, its probably obvious, but to me it looks like an old milk can. :)
ReplyDeleteYes it is an old milk can!
ReplyDeleteDH, who's father was a dairy farmer when he was alive, said your Malleys Sunrise is a cream can and would be 50yrs or more old. The rusted spot above the word Malleys would have had the farmer's name and the amount the can held in gallons stamped into it e.g. Deanne and a 6, 10 or 20 after it as those were the sizes. The lids also had these details stamped in. If it had been in good condition and with a lid it would be worth between $80-$200.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your little piece of history :D!
Thanks so much Robyn!
DeleteI had no idea these were hard to come by! I'm sure you'll have the perfect plan or two for it shortly Deanne.
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of them as mail boxes, I have also seen them for lots more money that I am prepared to pay.
DeleteThis was the first one I have seen for sale in my price bracket!
love your find! it would make a great plant pot.
ReplyDeletex
Actually I took a photo with a plant stuck in the top, but didn't end up using it in my story!
DeleteHi deanne, I actually have one of these sitting outside on a table waiting to one day be sold in a garage sale. Ours has Canowindra written on it, it too is rusted, doesn't have a lid but still has the base in tact. I would love to know what you plan on doing with it as I might have a change of heart and keepit myself.
ReplyDeleteblessings NEll
Hi Nell,
DeleteI think it would look fabulous just amongst plants in the garden or even with a plant in it or as an umbrella stand in the hallway, or to put your old rakes and shovels in etc. or probably the most common one I see is a mailbox!
Wow, what a fabulous find!!! I have only ever seen them painted all over with cottagey type artwork which just isn't me. Love the patina on it, a seriously brilliant find. The years of waiting and wanting have certainly paid off!! xx
ReplyDeleteFantastic. . No bottom no matter. Looking forward to what you come up with.

What a great find! Patience did indeed pay off for you.
ReplyDeleteIt's a happy day when a long sought treasure is found. The long hunt makes it all the more atreasure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely reward for your patience. it's perfect just like it is.
ReplyDeleteAwesome find Deanne! I love it when patience is rewarded like that too :)

It's awesome Deanne......
ReplyDeleteA letter box maybe?
Tania xx
Awesome! I have a long, mental list of things I have been looking for. It's so funny when I find it and bring it home and my husband says, "Why did you buy that?!" To which I reply in shock, "Are you kidding?! I've been looking for one of these for 20 years!"
ReplyDeleteBut of course he had no idea so to him it's a weird purchase. But I can't possibly tell him the list. He would get overwhelmed. LOL!
I can't wait to see what you do with it. Lisa~
Congratulations! I've got 3 (upstate NY is dairy country and they can be found fairly cheap) and I love them. It might be a blessing that the bottom is rusted out, I have one without a top and it collects water and grows mosquitoes if I forget to empty it! Have fun with your new treasure
ReplyDeleteI'd say well worth the wait Deanne and what a bargain price too. Thanks for linking up at Shabbilicious Friday.
